Project site

To build our bakery, farm and training facilities, we have obtained a piece of land in Platfontein. A lot of work is needed before we can use this land for our projects, such as:

- Groundwork
- Water/electricity connections € 1.750
- Fence and gates € 9.000
- House supervisor € 1.500

Bakery

In order to increase our ability to provide daily bread to a large number of people in this township, we are establishing a local bakery right next to the township. This will enable us to produce the bread locally and at much lower costs than buying bread in the nearby city.

In time we will also be able to teach locals to bake their own bread and employ more of them in the bakery. In the future selling some of the bread can provide income and cover their salaries.

- Moving and installing bakery € 4.500
- Repair oven € 2.000
- Flour, yeast etc.
- Salaries bakers € 1.500 per month

Chicken Farm Project

Eggs provide protein, fat, vitamin B12 and vitamin D and minerals such as phosphorus and selenium. They are also a source of vitamin A, vitamin B2 and folic acid and of minerals such as iron and zinc. We will set up a chicken farm to add eggs and chicken meat to the free meals we regularly serve to hundreds of people at our Food Kitchen.

To start with, an area of 1,5 hectares will be turned into a farm, all under a ‘not for profit’ model. But this farm is about more than chickens and crops - it’s about transformation. Through skills training, local families will find hope and opportunities for the future.

- Chicken coops and electric fences € 22.500
- Chickens  € 4.750
- Food for the chickens

Home Gardening Program

In addition to setting up a farm and bakery, the Home Gardening Program exists to empower townspeople to grow valuable crops to feed their families. We organize workshops for the families in which they learn about the construction of a vegetable garden, the care of the different crops and the harvest. Crops that are resistant to drought and other weather conditions have been chosen, such as tomatoes, sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, beans and corn.

In addition to vegetable gardens at the houses, we also create a central vegetable garden. In this vegetable garden, seedlings are grown that can be distributed among the families in Platfontein.

Skills and language training

The !Xun and Khwe each have their own language. Due to their history, maintaining their identity and language is very important to the tribes. However, to be able to get better job opportunities and receive proper health care it is crucial they can properly communicate with clients, employers and doctors in the nearby towns and cities.

In addition to removing the language barrier, vocational skills training will increase their income earning opportunities.

Soup kitchen

One of the main problems at the Platfontein is lack of sufficient food. We are setting up a Soup Kitchen that will provide bread and soup to 450 people a day, 3 days per week. In time, eggs will also be added.

We would love to feed the entire community, but that is only possible if there is lasting financial support to expanding the bakery and farm further.

- Food for 450 people € 1.000 per month
